There are many kinds of suffering. The kind we can liberate ourselves from is self-created suffering. Self-created suffering is caused, at the roots, by the contraction and isolation of our hearts. Moment by moment we form and feel different habitual patterns that either make us feel more alone or more connected with the world and all life. This is the process of karma (intentional action) which shapes the course of our lives. Buddhism is concerned with helping us recognize and reinforce the tendency towards openness and interconnection. This is how the heart is liberated. This is how we awaken.
